In school, I have always been a bright student. But that never made me think that I should opt for college overseas. But what made me decide to Study Abroad? It was travel! I had never been out of the country. Studying Abroad gave me the opportunity to see the world, without compromising my education.
To be perfectly honest I was just looking for a reason to travel, but couldn’t find a way to justify taking a break from studies to wander off somewhere in the world. Solution: Study Abroad, see the world, get college credits! I decided to go to Canada and got admission in a university at Ontario. Initially, I was so mesmerized by its scenic beauty that whenever I used to get time, I made it a point to explore the country. All the weekends used to be packed with short trips with my fellow classmates.
Gradually, my conversations got lesser and lesser with my school friends. Soon, I was totally detached from my previous life while making new friends and exploring the new place. You become incredibly close to the students you meet while studying abroad. Living with them, studying with them, partying with them and ultimately sharing the entire experience with them. Regardless of your differences, you come together, and it makes everything so much sweeter.
We had a week off between our semesters, so I had planned to visit the colossal and iconic Blue Mountains. Due to sudden illness I had to cancel the trip. Down with the flu, I was feeling low and obviously missing home-India. But due to zonal time differences, I couldn’t talk to my mother. So, I made myself some soup and decided to go through all my pictures thinking it might help.
Going through it I didn’t realise how quickly time flew, for like 2-3 hours I was checking out old pictures. Just then a deep feeling sunk in me, it was guilt, of leaving behind my best friend in India as well as other childhood friends who gave me such beautiful memories.
Teary-eyed I got nostalgic and undoubtedly, my school as well as childhood memories was the thing that could eventually cheer me up and made me feel better.
I got up and tried to call my best friend, it didn’t connect. After few futile attempts I decided may be a call isn’t enough. It was the month of October, I realized it’s her birthday in a week. I was determined to take a step and make her feel special. I booked a flight to my hometown. The plan was to surprise her on her birthday. I was supposed to reach a day prior and arrange a small party for her, inviting our close friends. Meanwhile I made a collage book, or I would like to call it a memory book of our pictures, highlighting all our memories and with a hope that she will be ecstatic to go through it. Fortunately, everything went as planned. I surprised her and made her feel special, rekindling our lost friendship.I made sure that I send a friend request to my best friend and all others on my LYK app so that we remain connected. Soon, all of them were added on my friend list. It was the best way to stay connected with them without the FOMO. When your heart lies there, then distance is just a word. Crossed continents, I might not be with them but to this date they are with me through LYK app. Now I make sure that none of my friends are left behind, after all the heart wants what it wants.
